Case studies from Hillphoenix, International Copper Alliance (ICA), Heat Transfer Technologies (Microgroove) and Kellen Company, YourCleanEnergy and NXTCold will be presented at ATMOsphere America 2017 taking place in San Diego, California!

The ATMOsphere Review Panel is pleased to announce the third round of case study selections for ATMOsphere America 2017 on June 5-7 in San Diego.
Hillphoenix, International Copper Alliance (ICA), Heat Transfer Technologies (Microgroove) and Kellen Company, YourCleanEnergy and NXTCold will reveal their innovative natural refrigerant-based technologies at the conference.
Hillphoenix | Lab Study of a Transcritical CO2 System with Parallel Compression and a Gas Ejector System – Measured Performance Applied to Bin Analysis by Jeff Newel
A transcritical CO2 booster system operating at the Hillphoenix Refrigeration Systems Lab in Covington GA was outfitted with a CO2 gas ejector system to improve system efficiency.
This study will compare the ejector system with the operation of a parallel compression only system and a standard transcritical booster system along with explaining the operational differences between the systems.
YourCleanEnergy | A year on - Innovative Transcritical CO2 Heat Pump System Providing Lower Cost Hydronic Heat than Oil Boilers  by Andy Baker
An innovative and sustainable trans-critical CO2 heat pump system of 80 ton capacity was installed January 2016 at the 120,000 square foot Alaska SeaLife Center to displace conventional oil and electric boilers. The CO2 heat pump system was further improved in mid- 2016 and has produced significant cost savings for a second year thru the sub-arctic winter of Seward, Alaska. This project required a challenging integration of four Mayekawa trans-critical CO2 heat pumps into a large and existing conventional medium temperature hydronic system.
This case study has the primary goal of evaluating the market potential of this trans-critical CO2 heat pump system to offset and ultimately replace the use of oil boilers in cold climates, and other heat pump systems that utilize synthetic refrigerants with significantly higher greenhouse warming potential (GWP). A comparison in performance and refrigerant leak events of the new Mayekawa CO2 heat pumps will be made to a pair of older Trane RTWD rotary screw heat pumps operating in the same facility that utilize R-134a (GWP= 1400).

The use of natural refrigerants in refrigeration equipment necessitates the redesign of heat exchangers. In particular, R744 heat exchangers must withstand high pressure because of the extraordinary high operating pressures of R744 systems; and R290 heat exchangers must minimize refrigerant volume because of the R290’s Level-3 flammability rating.
In this paper, several case studies are presented from various coil makers and refrigeration equipment makers to illustrate the design principles and manufacturing methods. Successful designs have been realized using high strength copper tube alloys and the development of new manufacturing equipment for smaller diameter copper tubes. Recent development in design simulations as well as real world applications will be presented.
NXTCOLD | General Cold Storage in South Gate Replacing an R22 Facility with Ultra-low Ammonia ERIC Technology Refrigeration Units by John Scherer 

This case study will show the General Cold Storage NXTCOLD installation in South Gate, CA in San Diego this year. This new construction facility replaces an R22 facility to be decommissioned with Ultra Low Ammonia (ULA) ERIC Technology refrigeration units.

There are eight roof top NXTCOLD units with twelve ammonia compressors. Single NXTCOLD units for smaller rooms have two compressors and 100% residual capacity. The largest ammonia charge is 30 pounds and smallest is 15 pounds. In addition to being state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly, the GCS plant with NXTCOLD equipment and cutting edge ADR control will pay about 65% less for power as compared to GCS's previous R22 facility.
