TerraChill DX2 for subcritical CO2
The TerraChill DX2 is a low temperature subcritical direct expansion refrigeration solution using CO2. It’s key advantages include:
- Use of the natural refrigerant CO2 ensures approximately an 80% reduction in the total refrigerant cost
- 60-70% reduction in HFC charge as all HFCs are removed from the sales area for low temperature loads
- 50-70% reduction in HFC leak rate as HFCs are only found in the machine room and the condenser, which dramatically reduces the risk of leaks
- 30-50% reduction in carbon footprint with reduction in HFC charge and leaks
- Minimal increase in energy consumption
- Less copper tubing required with CO2, which has 7 times the volumetric efficiency of R404a, thereby reducing line sizing tremendously
Alliance to expand transcritical CO2 offering
Hussmann recently announced an alliance with the Canadian company Systemes LMP, a leading supplier of cooling modules and heat recovery systems, to provide customized solutions for transcritical CO2 systems. Together, the two companies are capable of expanding the reach of one of the most adaptable transcritical refrigeration solutions on the market.
First US store using R290 refrigeration system
For the first R290 refrigeration system at a grocery store in the U.S., H.E. Butt Grocery Company (H-E-B) worked closely with Hussmann to identify the design criteria and specifications for using propane for a majority of the refrigerated display cases in the 83,000 ft2 store. In turn, Hussmann collaborated with Tecumseh, which equipped the majority of the display cases and walk-in coolers with condensing units. The Hussmann designed and engineered propane system enables the store to achieve its energy reduction goals of 70% while maintaining a safe, shopper friendly environment.
