About this event

Background: ATMOsphere America 2012 is very timely as several SNAP rulings for hydrocarbon applications have been approved just recently. In addition, the recent developments in the commercial refrigeration market in the US and Canada are expected to provide a boost for CO2 transcritical refrigeration in North America.

For the first time
ATMOsphere is coming to North America. With the intention to make it THE annual meeting place for industry experts to discuss natural refrigerant trends, latest technologies and regulatory issues in the US and Canada, it is targeting around 200 decision makers from leading retailers, suppliers, associations and more. Topics for presentations and workshops will be looking at end-users (retailers and consumer brands) as well as technology providers from the commercial and industrial refrigeration, heat pump and air conditioning sectors. The second day features in addition a session on latest market trends as well as regulations, standards and training.

24 October 2012 | Focusing on Natural RefrigerantsThe significance of a recent two-day conference was not only the extensive presentations regarding natural refrigerants such as CO2, HCs, and ammonia, but where the meeting was held — Washington, D.C.
6 July 2012 | Danfoss defines technology trends, potential of CO2 at ATMOsphere America 2012Danfoss, a leading manufacturer of high-efficiency electronic and mechanical components and controls for air-conditioning, heating, refrigeration and motion systems, participated in ATMOsphere America 2012, June 12-13 in Washington, DC. During the conference, which focused on the business case for natural refrigerants in the United States and Canada, Danfoss Vice President, Public Industry Affairs, Torben Funder-Kristensen made a presentation on “Global Technology Trends and Development in CO2.”
6 July 2012 | ATMOsphere America 2012: industry says that natural refrigerants make business sense200 experts gathered from 12-13 June in Washington D.C., during ATMOsphere America 2012, to discuss the business case for natural refrigerants in North America.
3 July 2012 | US HVAC&R technicians lack knowledge of naturals: Standardised training neededIt is critical that the US technician population develop a better understanding of natural refrigerants, according to presentations and roundtable discussions held at the ATMOsphere America 2012 conference in Washington DC in June 2012. With technicians assessed as having a weak grasp of refrigerant fundamentals, “it is going to be an interesting world as we transition” towards using flammable refrigerants, where skills become ever more important.
26 June 2012 | Energy savings with CO2 heat pumps at American food production plantsPresentations provided at the ‘ATMOsphere America 2012’ conference in Washington DC, 12-13 June 2012, discussed the business case for natural refrigerants in North America. Case studies on CO2 heat pump installations in a winery, a commercial bakery and two dairy/cheese production plants demonstrated concrete energy cost savings. The units are able to cater for both heating and cooling needs and cover a multitude of required temperatures involved in the production processes.
21 June 2012 | ATMOsphere America: technology case studies about low charge systemsIn this final article about the ATMOsphere America 2012 technology case studies showcased in Washington DC 12-13 June, outlines the key features of presentations by Zahid Ayub from Isotherm about low charge shell and tube evaporators and by Robert Lamb from Star Refrigeration about low charge packaged ammonia refrigeration systems.
20 June 2012 | HC charge limit divergence in UL household equipment standards called into questionA test group within Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is examining the suitability of the 57g HC charge limit for household refrigerators, according to a presentation by the organisation last week at ATMOsphere America 2012 in Washington DC. In post-presentation discussions the restrictive nature of the limit was in focus, a limit currently not consistent with the 1kg hydrocarbon limit for household room ACs .
18 June 2012 | Transcritical CO2 coming to US stores, as naturals become mainstream2013 will see main retailers in the US using transcritical CO2 supermarket systems – a technology already used in Canada. This was confirmed by speakers and participants at the ‘ATMOsphere America 2012 - the Business Case for Natural Refrigerants’ conference held in Washington DC, 12-13 June 2012. First installations are expected already this fall, once the technology receives UL approval.

18 June 2012 | Supervalu pleased with ammonia refrigerantWASHINGTON — About a month after starting up an ammonia-based refrigeration system in an Albertsons store in Carpinteria, Calif. — one of the first such systems in the U.S. — Supervalu is finding that the system is “operating like a champ,” said Richard Heath, senior manager, technology integration for Supervalu, Albertsons parent.
18 June 2012 | Alternative Refrigeration Is Feasible: PanelWASHINGTON — Alternative refrigeration systems using natural refrigerants such as carbon dioxide (CO2) are within reach of supermarket retailers from a cost and implementation perspective, though challenges remain, said a panel of supermarket executives at ATMOsphere America 2012, a conference on the business case for natural refrigerants held here last week at the Liaison Capitol Hill Hotel.
18 June 2012 | US EPA may allow HC venting from stand-alone refrigeratorsThe US EPA anticipates to have new listings this summer under its Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program for more refrigerant alternatives without use conditions, and later this year proposed rules in a couple of more sectors, according to a presentation at the ‘ATMOsphere America 2012’ conference in Washington DC. The EPA hinted that it will also be determining whether or not venting of hydrocarbons from refrigerators and stand-alone retail equipment will be permitted.
18 June 2012 | ATMOsphere America 2012: an exciting year ahead for CO2 refrigerationIn an end user panel session at ATMOsphere America 2012, moderated by Keilly Witman from the GreenChill Partnership, a panel of supermarket executives agreed that CO2 supermarket systems are within reach of retailers both from a cost and implementation perspective. Learning by doing is helping to reduce initial CO2 system costs whilst R744 is enabling retailers to reduce operational costs.
